LANAP In Phoenix:
Am I A Candidate?

LANAP is a revolutionary treatment for periodontal disease to stop infections and encourage new tissue growth. The procedure works by applying a laser light directly to the affected areas between the gums and teeth. The laser kills bacteria and removes the infected tissue without damaging healthy tissue.

Am I A Good Candidate For LANAP?

If you wish to schedule a LANAP procedure with Dr. Trujillo in Phoenix, AZ, there are minimal obstacles that should prevent you from doing so. This is due to the procedure’s safety and success, making it a viable treatment option for patients experiencing periodontitis. Additionally, patients with complicating factors, such as diabetes and pregnancy, are safe to have this procedure.

If you’re suffering from periodontitis, thinking about periodontal surgery, and have periodontal pockets that are at least 5mm wide, then you might be a good candidate for a LANAP treatment. The best way to know for certain is to arrange a consultation with a Periodontist.

What Is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious condition that damages the gums, teeth, and jawbone. When it first manifests, it can result in the faster growth of bacteria in the mouth but, if not treated properly, it can end in multiple tooth loss as the tissue that surrounds and holds the tooth in place is destroyed.

If you believe that you have periodontal disease or your doctor has diagnosed it, then LANAP treatments by Dr. Trujillo in Phoenix, AZ, might be the solution for you. Let’s look at the problem that gum disease causes, how LANAP treatment can help, and if you’re a good candidate for this procedure.

Periodontitis Can Be A Serious Problem

The first, and better-known, stage of periodontitis is gingivitis, also known as gum disease. This is inflammation that is caused by the presence of plaque and tartar that hasn’t effectively been cleaned away from the teeth. It can cause pain, sensitivity, bleeding, and an inflamed appearance. Gingivitis is also easier to treat, done partially through a thorough dental hygiene routine of brushing and flossing, as well as regular cleaning appointments with Dr. Trujillo.

However, if gingivitis isn’t managed effectively, it can turn into something more serious. Periodontitis is when the gums recede further from the teeth, leaving gaps that can become infected as they easily harbor bacteria and plaque. The acid the bacteria produces causes decay that starts to wear away at the bones and tissue holding your teeth in place. The tooth can become loose and fall out or may need to be removed as the result of an infection.

LANAP: A Better Way to Treat Gum Disease

The traditional method to treat periodontitis when it started to wear away at the teeth and bone was to perform periodontal surgery. This involved Dr. Trujillo removing any gum tissue that has been infected and suturing the remaining gums back together to diminish the gaps, or pockets, that are between the teeth and the gums. As was an invasive treatment that involved removing tissue from your mouth and could have changed the appearance of your smile.

LANAP, short for laser-assisted new attachment procedure, is an alternative treatment that involves using a laser instead of a scalpel. It is much more effective at specifically targeting and destroying infected tissue without having to damage the healthy tissue at all. Not only does this mean that there is no visible change to your smile, but it doesn’t require as much recovery time.

A LANAP procedure offers multiple advantages over traditional periodontal surgery. For one, there is minimal discomfort during or after the treatment, with your mouth being numbed beforehand, and often no pain medication is needed after. As such, you could return to your normal activities very shortly after a LANAP treatment. Additionally, the laser for LANAP procedures may also stimulate the growth of bone and tissue, which can aid your recovery even further.

What To Expect From Your LANAP Treatment

If you have been told that you are a candidate for LANAP treatment, or you simply want to know what the procedure involves, we are going to look at what you should expect.

Dr. Trujillo will begin by taking an x-ray of your mouth, seeing the location and extent of the problem. If LANAP is a suitable option, you will return later for the treatment. LANAP usually takes around two hours or less. A local anesthetic will be provided to ensure that any pain during the treatment is minimized. Only one side of your mouth can be treated per session, so if both sides need treatment, you may need to return.

Following The LANAP Procedure

Downtime following the treatment is minimal. In many cases, you may be able to return to work and your daily schedule as soon as you leave our office, though physical activity should be limited for a few hours.

You may experience some minor bleeding or swelling, but complications are rare. If you experience anything out-of-the-ordinary, we recommend you get in touch with your Dr. Trujillo as soon as possible.

To ensure that the results of the treatment last for as long as possible, it’s essential that you improve your oral hygiene routine and habits at home. If you’re not certain how to improve your dental hygiene, ask Dr. Trujillo and he will be happy to offer clear advice to follow at home.
